Many larger organisations are obliged by law to take measures around combatting modern slavery, including by publishing an annual statement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Modern slavery refers to slavery, servitude and forced or compulsory labour, and can include debt bondage, human trafficking and forced or early marriage. Over 12,000 people were referred to the UK authorities in 2021 as victims of modern slavery, but the real number of people is estimated to be more than 130,000 people and is estimated to cost the UK \u00a333 billion per year. Is this a regulatory requirement?<\/strong><\/p><div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-toggle-wrap right\"><span class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-state-indicator wp-block-ub-chevron-down\"><\/span>\n                    <\/div><\/div><div role=\"region\" aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-content-wrap ub-hide\" id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-0-05094c15-a035-43a4-a822-5974b648ec29\">\n\n<p>This question is for larger organisations which have to meet the regulatory requirements on Modern Slavery, under section 54 (Transparency in Supply Chains) of the Modern Slavery Act 2015.&nbsp; These are large organisations, broadly any UK &#8216;body corporate&#8217; or partnership supplying goods or services with annual turnover above \u00a336 million.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Government advice: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/publish-an-annual-modern-slavery-statement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Publish an annual modern slavery statement &#8211; GOV.UK<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A commercial organisation is required to publish an annual statement if it:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>supplies goods or services<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>has an annual turnover of \u00a336 million or more&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>is a \u2018body corporate\u2019 or a partnership, wherever incorporated or formed, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>carries on a business, or part of a business, in the UK&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This can include charities and public sector organisations as well as private companies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Organisations are responsible for determining whether the legislation applies to them<\/em><\/strong>. You may wish to seek legal advice to decide if your organisation needs to produce an annual statement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Modern slavery itself is covered under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/ukpga\/2015\/30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Modern Slavery Act 2015<\/a>, which includes offences around Slavery, Servitude and Forced or Compulsory Labour, and Human Trafficking (arranging or facilitating the travel of another person with a view to them being exploited).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle\" id=\"ub-content-toggle-05a03ad0-35bb-49e5-a84c-db654dcae488\" data-mobilecollapse=\"false\" data-desktopcollapse=\"true\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion\" id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-block-\">\n                <div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-title-wrap\"\" aria-controls=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-0-05a03ad0-35bb-49e5-a84c-db654dcae488\" tabindex=\"0\">\n                    <p class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-title ub-content-toggle-title-05a03ad0-35bb-49e5-a84c-db654dcae488\"><strong>Regulatory requirements and Modern Slavery statements<\/strong><\/p><div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-toggle-wrap right\"><span class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-state-indicator wp-block-ub-chevron-down\"><\/span>\n                    <\/div><\/div><div role=\"region\" aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-content-wrap ub-hide\" id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-0-05a03ad0-35bb-49e5-a84c-db654dcae488\">\n\n<p>For those who need to comply, the regulatory requirements include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Publishing an annual statement setting out the steps they take to prevent modern slavery in their business and their supply chains&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Publishing the statement on their UK website&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Updating the statement every year&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Having statement approved by board of directors and signed off by a Director&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is also recommended to add the statement to a <a href=\"https:\/\/modern-slavery-statement-registry.service.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">government registry<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organisations are not expected to guarantee that all their supply chains are \u2018slavery free\u2019.
